The ancient Egyptian civilization is rooted in a past so remote that it is considered one of the oldest world civilizations . It dates back to wellover five thousand years. More than any other people under the sun, theancient Egyptians recorded every aspect of their life on the walls of their temples and tombs and on PAPYRUS rolls. Naturally, writing on PAPYRUS is more convenient and handier than carving on stone or clay which, though imperishable, is too cumbrous for daily records.

PAPYRUS is not simply the very first type of paper man ever knew. Actually, the word "paper" itself is derived from it. PAPYRUS has a very special value as it is very flimsy and tough at the same time. All sorts of materials can be used for writing or painting on it. No machine or sticking materialis used as it is hand made from beginning to end.

PAPYRUS, a tall sedge of the Nile valley, was food for the masses for thousands upon thousands of years. It has a triangular towering stalk as high as four meters. It went into the making of furniture, skiffs and boats, sails, ropes, boxes, baskets, sandals and a variety of things, above all paper was made of it.

However, with the passage of time and the interaction of world civilizations the PAPYRUS plant and paper disappeared for hundreds of years. The ancientEgyptians shrouded the manufacture of Papyrus sheets in secrecy. However, researchers made relentless efforts to unravel the secret of this valuable beautiful paper. Actually, the stalkof the PAPYRUS sedge is split longitudinally and the outer green crusts removed. It is cut into thin strips and soaked in water for severaldays. They are pressed by the roll to get the water out. Then they are laid side by side horizontally and vertically on a piece of cloth. When put in a big manual press the water is squeezed out and the strips stick together because of their morphological make-up and the viscid substancein their cells.

This is how PAPYRUS sheets were made by ancient Egyptians Thousands of years ago, and by EGYPTRADE today.
